SUCCESS FOR NEBA YOUNGSTERS IN EBU 2006 SCHOOLS SIM PAIRS
The NEBA enjoyed more
success via its local youngsters in the above event. In the real bridge
section Thomas Pallister and Tom Siday (Wolsingham School) finished second
nationally, missing first place by only 0.02%. An untried partnership of Alex
Craggs (Polam Snr) and Thomas Wigham (QE Darlington) finished a commendable
12th. In the minibridge section Caitlin Walker
and Grace
Godwin (Polam Jnrs) came second, and
Daniel Woodward and Thomas Stockdale (Yarm Prep) finished 4th.
Congratulations to them and all others
who partook. Full local and national results are given below.

An additional aspect of the morning was the provision of a "bridge

those parents who hung around. Several parents stated a continuing
interest; and arms up backs were not apparent.
Particular thanks are due to Hurworth B.C. who met all expenses for the

A final note to all the youngsters, and I
always say this because it is very important. Thank you for taking
part. There was a lot of talent on display, and for some of you who
might have only played bridge for a few weeks, it was a very brave
decision to take part. Don't be discouraged if you think you didn't
do well. The event and you were a success because you were there.

The
Schools Bridge and
Schools Minibridge Simultaneous Pairs sponsored by
ECatsBridge are
open to all schools that can get together at least one table to
play.
These fun events give youngsters an ideal opportunity
to play in what may well be their first national event, competing
against all the other schools entering.
The organiser, normally a teacher, is sent the
material they need to set up a heat - obviously the organiser will
have full access to the hands, so cannot participate in the event!
The pack contains
-
The material for making up twelve hands, so these
can be prepared in advance. Students have to play at least 8 of
these to be included.
-
Booklets containing a commentary on the hands, to be
handed to the students when they have finished ... this commentary
gives them suggested bidding sequences in the case of the Schools
event, and details the point count if it is a Minibridge event, and
then suggests how play should have progressed in order to obtain a
good result.
A heat for the above was held as the
fifth termly Minibridge/Bridge competition on Sat 27th
November ’04. The event is designed to introduce young beginner
bridge players to a gentle game of competitive bridge against other
schools. On this occasion there were boys and girls, aged between 8
and 13 years old, from Polam Hall Junior School, Polam Hall
Senior School, Wolsingham School, Yarm Prep School, Willington
Parkside, St Hilds Hartlepool and Hurworth Secondary.
For the first time there were two
tables of "real" bridge as opposed to minibridge, which represents
real progress by the youngsters.
There was some quite fierce
competition throughout the morning, but all the 43 youngsters
enjoyed themselves, and were particularly well behaved. It is
possible that the interval refreshments of crisps, icepops and
biscuits, chased down by lemonade and coke, proved equally popular.
Perhaps not the healthiest of snacks, but tackled in typical locust
fashion. All participants played very well, and present the lovely
potential of many more graduating to “real” bridge in the not too
distant future. The very small amount of help provided by the
attendant teachers was almost irrelevant. Perhaps special mention to
Pat de Martino who looked after a table complete beginners.
Prizes were won by Melissa Emerson
and Christina Hodgson (Wolsingham), Ben Tombling and Matthew
Langford (Yarm), Deborah Paul and Alex Craggs (Polam Junior), Alex
Day and Sarah Scott (Polam Senior), Matthew Gordon and Nathan
Aldworth (Wolsingham), Christopher Arnold and James Tyers (St
Hilds), Martin Dawson and Arron Fox (Parkside), Emma Toogood and Zoe
Armstrong (Wolsingham), Laura Dawson and Louise Swinbank
(Wolsingham), Steven Brown and Thomas Graham (Parkside) and Rosie
Edmonds and Tom Siday (Wolsingham). Prizes and
sponsorship were provided by Hurworth Bridge Club.
Special thanks must go to Beverly
Godfrey (St Georges Centre Manager) for yet again providing her body
and soul.
